Service-learning book published by Christine Cress

Dr. Christine Cress announced the release of her new book, Democratic Dilemmas of Teaching Service-Learning: Curricular Strategies for Success, now available through Stylus Publishing, LLC. Dr. Cress is chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy in the Graduate School of Education, and adds this title to her previous book, Learning through Serving, published in May of 2005.

The new book includes 24 chapters of contemporary case studies of service-learning projects. It delineates political and ethical issues encountered when students and faculty are involved in community-based projects. Service-learning activities proliferate throughout many disciplines and educators are learning that while civic engagement can be complicated, it also presents rich opportunities for learning and problem solving in a democratic society.

Service-learning is a pedagogical strategy where classes are specifically designed to engage students in community service activities with intentional learning objectives and opportunities for reflective integration that connect to students’ academic disciplines. Using real incidents, instructional resources, and classroom activities, the book explores intersections of political choice, freedom of speech, free press, and diversity of viewpoints and experiences that create democratic tensions and tangible learning opportunities.

“This book is a powerful set of lessons about how to engage college students in ways that are challenging, provocative, and that, most important, provide learning that lasts for active citizenry,” says Thomas Ehrlich, president emeritus of Indiana University, and senior scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching who provided the forward for the book.

Susan Lenski publishes reading comprehension guide

Dr. Susan Lenski has published a new book on reading comprehension. Essential Comprehension Strategies for the Intermediate Grades will help classroom teachers increase student comprehension not only in reading, but with other subjects as well. The book outlines 23 strategies that are listed in alphabetical order for easy location and includes a chart that helps preservice and classroom teachers understand how and when to use them. Dr. Lenski is well-known for her work nationally and internationally as a researcher and practitioner. This is her seventh book.
