Nancy Sullivan, MEd ’01, is Oregon’s Secondary Librarian of the Year. She works at Madison High School in Portland Public Schools. She is a graduate of PSU’s Library Media Master’s Degree program.
The Oregon Association of School Libraries (OASL) presents the award annually at their conference. The award is given to school librarians who “demonstrate exceptional performance as a teacher, an instructional consultant, an information specialist, and leader.”
After a dozen years at Madison, she’s learned one important lesson: be flexible. Sullivan is well-known for hosting numerous author events at her school, providing inspiration to her students. Sometimes events go as planned, but if they don’t, Sullivan knows how to smooth things out.
The award acknowledges Sullivan for her statewide advocacy of school library programs. She successfully lobbied the Oregon Legislature to pass an important bill (HB 2586) requiring strong library programs in schools.
Locally, Sullivan is the originator of Madison High School’s annual Poetry Slam competition, which grew to become an annual citywide event that provides students with the opportunity to showcase their work and compete with other young writers across the city.
Sullivan helped produce a library advocacy video that reminds school administrators, parents and legislators about the importance of school libraries and the value of having strong library programs in schools.
“She was an exemplary student and has been an exemplary librarian,” said Ruth Murray, faculty member and advisor in the Library Media program. “I have often observed her at school and been awed by the amount of work she puts into promoting the library, research, and reading to the student body. She arranges phenomenal author visits and takes students on numerous field trips to visit authors and other literary events. When her assistant was cut, she opened a coffee bar in the library to support hiring her back!”
Sullivan has also taught in the PSU Library Media program and is a cooperating teacher for the GSE. Dave Bullock, library media professor and director of technology, says Sullivan was a standout in her studies while also working as a graduate assistant for him in the MISL. “She is a great cooperating teacher for us,” said Bullock. “She’s the first one I think of when we need to place a practicum student.”
Sullivan’s favorite Dewey Decimal System number is 793.2!
Congratulations to Nancy Sullivan.
