GSE alumna retires as president of PCC Sylvania

Linda GerberDr. Linda Gerber, BA ‘76, MS ‘88, EdD ’95, retired from her position as Portland Community College Sylvania Campus President in April after a remarkable career in education spanning 37 years. During her eight years at PCC, Dr. Gerber oversaw the college’s largest campus and the PCC district’s sustainability efforts, including the creation of a Climate Action Plan that has led to a reduction in carbon emissions of 38% per SFTE.

Dr. Gerber’s three diplomas from PSU demonstrate a significant career in education that began as a single mom driving a school bus. Earning an associate’s degree from PCC, she then transferred to PSU and earned a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s in education, and a doctorate in leadership in postsecondary education, all at Portland State, while serving as a tutor, an instructor, and later as director of the Educational Opportunity Program at PSU. She worked as dean of humanities at Mt. Hood Community College, retiring in 2004 as dean of instruction. She came out of retirement and was named to the PCC president’s position in 2007.

In retirement, she expects to continue her work to combat climate change and will continue to serve on the boards of the Northwest Earth Institute and Earth Advantage. She looks forward to spending more time with her husband, children, and grandchildren and enjoying her heritage farm on the Clackamas River.
