The Counselor Education Department was recently awarded a PSU President’s Diversity Grant to work with minorities and underrepresented students in the campus community. The grant will enable the department to engage in two outreach activities—providing additional counseling groups, and the distribution of informational brochures about PSU counseling services for underrepresented students.
The Counseling Department wanted to provide counseling students with additional training in cultural competence while providing minorities and underrepresented groups access to counseling services.
“The Counselor Education Department is really eager to reach out to underrepresented students both as clients and as future counselors,” says Dr. Lisa Aasheim, director of the PSU Community Counseling Clinic. “We know about many of the unique challenges and stressors that accompany the experience of being a minority student on campus, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to support students in facing these challenges.”
