Dr. Peih-Ying (Peggy) Lu, from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, introduced GSE faculty to her research in cultural competency for the medical profession. She is an associate professor in the Center for Language and Culture at Kaohsiung Medical University and a Fulbright Scholar currently working at Harvard University. Her work challenges conventional practices in the medical field that focus on task-based instruction rather than language issues and cultural communication.
Dr. Lu initiated a lively exchange with GSE faculty about teaching methodology for culture and language in preK-12 classrooms and how faculty approach assessment of cultural competencies in teacher educators.
Her recently published book, English in Medical Education, with John Corbett, is intended to help medical professionals better understand the importance of cultural communication in working with patients.
