New GSE associate dean selected

Caskey, MickiDean Randy Hitz announced the appointment of Dr. Micki M. Caskey to Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. Caskey has worked in the Curriculum and Instruction department in the GSE for 15 years. She has been a Graduate Teacher Education Program cohort leader specializing in the content areas literacy, action research, learning strategies, content enhancements, and teacher education. Dr. Caskey has also been the co-Principle Investigator for the American Indian Urban Teacher Program and faculty advisor for the Online Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to coming to PSU, she spent more than 20 years working with students in inner-city schools. 

“She is remarkably well qualified to fill this role, and we are fortunate that she has agreed to provide leadership to the GSE through this position,” said Dean Randy Hitz.

Dr. Caskey is a nationally-known expert on middle level education, having written many articles and books on effective middle grades practices and programs. She is past chair of the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) Research Advisory Committee, past chair of the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group (MLER SIG), past editor of Research in Middle Level Education Online, former higher education representative to the Oregon Middle Level Association, and former board member of the Portland Reading Council. She is the recipient of the John H. Lounsbury Award for Distinguished Service, the highest honor attainable in the field of middle level education.

She will start her new position August 1, 2013. GSE faculty and staff will say a fond farewell to Dr. Liza Finkel, who has served in the associate dean capacity since 2010.
