Professor Joel Arick granted emeritus status

Dean Randy Hitz has announced that Special Education Professor Dr. Joel Arick, who recently retired from the GSE, has been granted emeritus status by the university. As an authority on autism and Asperger’s, Joel Arick has written and produced curriculum materials and set up model classrooms all over the United States. He implemented the PSU Autism Training and Research Center and led research and professional development in autism and Asperger’s syndrome. He is the project director of the Regional Program Autism Training Sites (RPATS), a state-wide initiative to develop and maintain a network of training sites for teachers and autism specialists throughout Oregon, and continues to implement that project. Dr. Arick and his colleagues developed two research-based, nationally used curriculum products for children with autism:
• The STAR Program: Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research (Arick, Loos, Falco, and Krug, 2004)
• FACTER: Functional Assessment and Curriculum for Teaching Everyday Routines (Arick, Nave, and Hoffman, 2004)
Dr. Arick holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from PSU.
