The GSE community mourns the loss of Dr. Judy Edwards Allen, a former faculty member and long-time chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Allen served the GSE from 1983 to her retirement in 1994. After her time with the GSE, she continued to work and volunteer in a wide range of activities. One of her areas of expertise was technology, having worked as the director of the Computer Technology Program at the Northwest Regional Educational Lab.
In 1992, Dr. Allen published the book Five Stages of Getting Well, about how the power of positive thinking and an optimistic outlook brought her through her first instance of cancer. Retirement did not end her success: she wrote another book and hosted public readings, opened a Care Center, and became an integral part of all the communities surrounding her. Dr. Allen most recently lived in Manzanita with her husband, Jack.
“She was one of the most positive, optimistic, and take-charge-of-her-own-life people I have ever met,” says Cheryl Livneh, Associate Dean. “She will be greatly missed.”
Judy and her husband Jack have five children and 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, June 22, at 3pm, in the Nehalem City Hall, 35900 Eighth St., Nehalem. A slide show and memorabilia will be on display beginning at 2pm.
