Oregon’s new education officer, Rudy Crew, will be the keynote speaker at the annual GSE State of the School event on September 18, 2012.
Dr. Crew began his new position as Oregon’s Chief Education Officer on July 1, and will oversee all three of Oregon’s education systems from preK-12 through higher education. In a long career as an educator, Dr. Crew has been a teacher, principal, and administrator. As a superintendent he has led some of the largest school districts in the country, including Sacramento, Tacoma, New York City, and Miami. Since 2009, he has been a professor in the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California.
Dr. Crew is a strong advocate for children and underserved minorities, and has a national reputation for turning schools around. In a recent address to Oregon’s school administrators he stated, “we are the human curriculum that is capable of being able to teach young people and the adults who teach them an enormous range of what it means to be human, not just what is measured by a standardized test.”
The Chief Education Officer is a new position created by Governor John Kitzhaber as part of his new plan to better serve students from “cradle to career.”
The Graduate School of Education’s annual State of the School event will be held at the Oregon Zoo from 8-9:30am, and is by invitation only. To attend, please contact Julie Thompson, julit@pdx.edu.
